Biography
Born in Rotherham
I’ve always loved painting and drawing from being a young girl. However, I didn’t have the time as an adult. I lived in Malaga for many years raising my family then returned to the UK in 2014, now settled in south Manchester.
This is when I really started to paint. I joined an art group where I was introduced to oils and palette knife techniques, and I absolutely loved it. I’m self-taught and love to paint impressions of land, city and seascapes. I find inspiration from the beauty of nature. I would describe my work as impressionistic, graceful, and textured.
I enjoy exhibitions and showing my work and I’m very proud of it. It makes me extremely happy when someone finds a connection in my work and loves it enough to take it home with them.
Smart Gallery speak with Jayne Deach about her work, inspiration, and daily life as an Independent Artist…
Hi Jayne, we’d love to know what you’re working on at the moment. Could you tell us a little about it?
At the moment I’m working on a commission painting for a client who has just returned from the south of France. I’m working from a photo she took. She wants an impression of the photograph and it’s an absolute joy to paint.
What motivates you to create?
When I see something I like, I want to recreate the image onto my canvas. I’m inspired by nature the most.
How do you feel your style has developed over time?
I don’t know if I have any artistic influences, I just paint because it makes me happy.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
I don’t know if I have any artistic influences, I just paint because it makes me happy.
Is there a specific environment or material that's integral to your work?
I love using oils onto canvas the most, and I’m happier painting at home. I like being home comfortable with my dogs.
What is a typical day like for you as an Artist?
A typical day for me starts with a dog walk.
Some days I see family, go to yoga and I’m partial to a little retail therapy.
Of course, there’s chores and errands too. I like to be organised and get everything done before I get back to my easel. I prefer to paint in the afternoon when I’ve done everything. To me painting is relaxing, and I find it very therapeutic.
What does your ideal working environment look like?
My ideal working environment is at home with my dogs. However I do enjoy painting with my artist friends sometimes too.
What has been your favourite piece to create so far, and why?
I can’t think of an actual favourite painting. Each one is special to me, and I put all my emotions and love into each of them. Yes, I will have to pass on this one.
Any top tips for getting inspired?
For inspiration go walking and notice your environment. Some of my artist friends notice people and expressions and movement. Some notice architecture. For me it’s nature, flowers, trees, light, views.
Finally, if you could meet any other Artist past or present, who would it be and why?
If I could meet a past artist, it would have to be Monet.
I love his impressions of landscape and his haunting cities.
